CH. 10 5.10.1 Creating Outlines

5.10.1 Creating Outlines

This section got me, it is not the easiest to wrap my brain around because my head wants to know every little thing like how did excel know to grab that data or how to make that data part of the outline. But at the end of the day we only need to learn how to create, collapse & expand. modify, and remove the outline. So remember go to the data tab on the ribbon of Excel and click subtotal in the outline section to get the wonderful little window that pops up and helps you set everything. best way to learn for this one unfortunately is just by doing.

  1. Outlines are an effective way to group details into headings :-)

Sometimes, you just need to do the task as it is easier to experience something instead of just reading and thinking about it ^_^

  2. Excel is really great at assuming what data needs to be used. And sometimes not so great like we learned last class during Mr. Wu's presentation about the SUM function, where it wanted to calculate the data vertically instead of horizontally.

  3. What you said is very accurate! The best way to learn is by doing. I also realized that practice was the only step and motivation for me to be promoted in the seven examinations I participated in MOS! Please let me know if you need any help.

  4. Excel is amazing. It almost seems like it has a life of its own with so many features and functions. My brain gets a little scrambled too when I don't know the exact how or why of a situation, but like you said, we just have to need to "learn how to create, collapse & expand. modify, and remove the outline." Creating outlines was not as difficult as the functions for me.

  5. This section was rough for me. I am still having a hard time understanding outlines and will have to circle back to review it once more before taking the certification test.

  6. One of the best ways to learn is by practice and Excel requires many hours devoted to practice.

  7. Creating outlines was also a difficult process for me to grasp due to the many rules applied. I don't have experience using this in work or back in high school. This feature is something to learn while working because showing the uses for it during school is just confusing for me.

  8. I was planning on catching up on LabSim all week and I'm only a section away from starting 5.10, but the plans are gonna have to be a little delayed because I completely forgot about another exam for math. Judging from this post and the other comments above, I'm guessing it's going to take a little more time to grasp the concept than the other sections but wish me luck in pulling through!!

  9. Yes, the best way to learn something is by practicing. Excel has many unique features that are very useful but can take longer to comprehend.

  12. Just doing it helped me out a lot. I learned from my mistakes. Don't get me wrong I still am not perfect at it.

  13. I actually thought about the same thing. The fact that Excel recognizes what I'm attempting to do automatically intrigues me.
